Tilted awkwardly “as if Chaplin was turning on his shoe”, this 77-ton Richard Serra ‘Berlin Block’ is both a tribute to the comedian and a comment on the Cold War awkwardly dividing Berlin into two blocs.
It sits on the deck of the Neue Nationalgallerie and is aligned with another Serra artwork, the controversial ‘Berlin Junction’.
I was inspired to go in search of this sculpture by architect Filipe Serro’s thoughtful article on how the two pieces complement each other and prompt thinking about public monuments. ω
