The Zille Milieu

Zille-Milieu

Zille panels on Delbruck Str. - by SL Wong

Ordinary Berliners of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were wittily depicted by beloved illustrator Heinrich Zille (1858–1929). His thrust was satirical and affectionate social criticism, particularly in the portrayal of the lives of the underclasses, referred to as the Zille-Milljöh (Zille milieu). Accompanying text was often in Berlin dialect. The city is full of odes to him; these panels were on a wall near our local Brauhaus. ω
